I’ve reviewed 50+ unlimited design services and the companies make a profit in a few different ways. The model is called unlimited but they provide a service within a set of constraints: One request at a time. This limits the number of jobs per month Two business day turnaround. This limits the number of jobs per month One business day for revisions. These can be small changes and add more working days Slack. Not many businesses are disciplined to provide requests every day. Some miss a few days or a week without adding new requests to the Up Next list. With these constraints, you start with around 20 business days per month which would equal 10 requests per month. Add some revisions and the requests drop to 8 per month. Add some slack and the requests drop to 6 per month. Based on the (rough) current average monthly cost for unlimited design services of $US2,000, and the cost per design is $US333. Assuming a time to design and make revisions of 3 hours, you get an effective hourly rate of $US111 per hour. If your service relies on outsourced designers, you might use global labor arbitrage to pay a small team $US20 per hour to do your design work. After some training costs and additional team meeting time, the profit on this service might be $US80 per hour.
